Driver behaviour

The challenge for fleet operators is to find an enabling technology which delivers savings consistently, and works effectively on every vehicle every time.

While hybrid or pure electric vehicles may be a major part of the solution in the future, changes in driver behaviour can make a sizable impact now. Driver behaviour is an important way of saving fuel and reducing a fleet’s carbon footprint, and is often underestimated.

The driver alone can contribute more fuel saving than almost any other factor. The Eco-LogTM system has proven that a variation of over 40% between the best and worst drivers is typical within fleets performing the same operation. Once implemented, Eco-LogTM improves the overall efficiency of all the drivers, and reduces the spread in performance.

A key aspect of Eco-LogTM implementation is driver acceptance. Eco-LogTM responds to each driver’s performance. When first installed, the system will allow the driver to follow his normal style. The feedback provided through the in-vehicle driver aid will then encourage small changes. This avoids irritation and encourages the driver to accept the system. Over time, Eco-LogTM increases the level of instruction as the driver improves. Each driver achieves sustainable improvement, at their own pace.

The cornerstone of Lysanda’s philosophy is to deliver high quality, accurate data to the fleet manager. This leads to a heightened understanding of how their drivers are performing, and provides managers with the tools to improve. The online reporting system enables fleet operators to see the improvements which are being made. He/she can compare an individual driver to the overall performance of the fleet and intelligently set targets.

If drivers make targeted, subtle changes to their driving style they can typically improve fuel economy by 15 to 20% without impacting journey times.

Typically 40% spread between best and worst drivers fuel economy within a fleet.
